I’ve had a few friends ask me how I budget, so I thought I’d share what works for us, as well as a monthly budget printable to help keep your spending on track. It’s always more fun when it’s pretty! 🙂
Here are my 4 rules that I follow with our budget:
1. Write It Down!
My pastor always says “It isn’t a plan unless you write it down.” This is SO true for your budget! How can you possibly know the status of your cash flow if you don’t keep track? HA! You can’t.
We try to do as much as we can with cash using the envelope system. Each category gets an envelope, and you deposit the budgeted amount into the envelope, and take out money for ONLY that category. It really helps you see where you holes are in your rough estimate. When the cash is gone from the envelope, you’re done for the month!
3. Live On Less.
We could go out and get a new car. I could get my nails done once a week. Eat out lunch and dinner multiple times a week…and dig a big hole of debt. We don’t want to do that. We do have a small amount of debt that we are working to aggressively pay back, and then live debt free. When I got engaged, I had ZERO debt. Life is so much easier when you aren’t juggling 12 different payments. Be ok with less & learn to live on less than what you make. A spirit of contentment is so much better than the temporary happiness of new things.
4. Budget for the “unexpected.”
Have a place in your budget for car & home repairs & those Miscellaneous things that just happen as life comes along. Also, work on building an emergency fund for those big surprises. 🙂
